Last weekend, I went to the rental section of the local grocery store and saw this interesting movie and decided to rent it. Stay With Ewan MacGregor, Naomi Watts and another nice looking young man who’s name I can’t remember right now. Anyway, when it was all said and done there I sat, like maybe 98% of all the other Americans who saw it, with a ridiculously dumbfounded look on my face wondering just what the heck was that all about!
Well, Yesterday, as I was cutting out pictures from a book, I had a revelation! Maybe not from God but it was a revelation all the same. MacGregor’s character whose name is Sam (I think) in the movie is not a psychiatrist as implied but in-fact an artist who is psychotic. This is why, most of the characters in his delusional world are either psychiatrists or artists. He stops taking his meds, which are the meds shown in the movie (the name of the prescriptee we cannot see) that he counts everyday. He has attributed them to his, maybe is maybe isn’t, suicidal girlfriend (Naomi Watts). The apartment with all the small script saying “forgive me” is in-fact his own apartment. The paintings attributed to Henry, the other main character who may or may not be an artist and it doesn’t really matter, are really Sam’s too. In the movie, Sam the so called psychiatrist, described to his girlfriend how Henry can create whole worlds with his imagination if he concentrates hard enough. He is actually describing his own imaginative abilities. None of the scenes are reality except for the very last scene which shows us the actual automobile accident which kills Henry, his girlfriend and parents. Sam, who has already stopped taking his meds, and is delusional stops to help. In his psychotic stage he assumes the persona of a doctor. H cannot save Henry and this is the milestone of a total decomposition into a complete psychotic episode. Whether or not he has a relationship with the woman played by Watts is irrelevant. Perhaps they did fall in love and perhaps she attempted or successfully committed suicide. Perhaps he himself, committed suicide and that is how he got stuck in this nightmarish world between life and death. Maybe I’m full of crap and don’t know what the heck I’m talking about.

Maybe I’m old fashioned (a possibility) but I like to watch a movie and let the writer, director, and actors do the work. If I have to make up the end, or twist my brain into a pretzel in order for it to make sense, they should be paying me! I don’t feel happy when, after investing two hours, the credits start to roll, and my husband and I look at each other and say HUH? Thanks for the heads up. I won’t be renting STAY.
